  • Miscanthus Morning Light
    Narrow leaves with a wide central white stripe and yellow margins.

  • Helictotrichon sempervirens
    Evergreen and relatively smallwith narrow leaves. Prefers full sun and is drought resistant.

    Small evergreen sedge with broad golden yellow bands down each leaf and only thin stripes of green. Low arching habit.

  • Elymus megallanicus
    Probably the most intensely blue of all ornamental grasses. It forms a lax sprawling clump with 'wheat like' flowers

  • Don't talk to the plants. Let the garden speak to you.
  • Next time you think about bog gardening or container gardening, remember mind gardening.
  • Without meaning, a garden is just a pile of materials.
  • A conceptualist gardener is a psychoanalyst of places.
  • Every garden is a political act. Every plant is a political prisoner.
  • A garden does not have to be a 'retreat'. It can also be an attack.
  • Forget 'gardening with nature' and other platitudes. gardening should say something.
  • Avoid vagueness. An emotion can dictate the flavour of your space, and it may not be immediately observable. But when revealed it ought to be instantly recognisable.
  • The theme can be autobiographical or based on a plant, a colour, a shape or even a philosophical idea.
  • Give the garden a theme and stick to it.

ECOYARDZ

  • Grow your own food wherever possible - use growhouses to cultivate salads throughout the year. Fruit tree make great features clothing yard walls.
  • By buying quality products for your yard, they will not need replacing so much and so use less raw materials and energy in the long run.
  • Reduce your carbon footprint by staying at home.

LIVING WALL SHOW AT NEC

Autumn Fair Four Oaks 005

Visiting the NEC in Birmingham this week for the Autumn Fair, I came across this new living wall that has been planted besides the new Arena building.

It is really stunning, a mixture of evergreens in a myriad of colours and shades. Most interesting is the 'Feather Grass', Stipa tenuissima, that flows down the wall as a mass of flowing flower heads.
