HOW TO BE A CONCEPTUALIST GARDENER
LIST TAKEN FROM 'GARDENS OF THE MIND' ARTICLE BY TOM RICHARDSON (DAILY TELEGRAPH 12/4/08)
Don't talk to the plants. Let the garden speak to you.
Next time you think about bog gardening or container gardening, remember mind gardening.
Without meaning, a garden is just a pile of materials.
A conceptualist gardener is a psychoanalyst of places.
Every garden is a political act. Every plant is a political prisoner.
A garden does not have to be a 'retreat'. It can also be an attack.
Forget 'gardening with nature' and other platitudes. gardening should say something.
Avoid vagueness. An emotion can dictate the flavour of your space, and it may not be immediately observable. But when revealed it ought to be instantly recognisable.
The theme can be autobiographical or based on a plant, a colour, a shape or even a philosophical idea.
Give the garden a theme and stick to it.
ECOYARDZ
By planting in an urban area no matter how little it still helps to oxygenate the atmosphere and in the case of some plants filter toxins.
Grow your own food wherever possible - use growhouses to cultivate salads throughout the year. Fruit tree make great features clothing yard walls.
By buying quality products for your yard, they will not need replacing so much and so use less raw materials and energy in the long run.
I hope you enjoy my blogging scrapbook of all things relating to owning and living with a very small garden.
My own yard is only 5m x 5m so I understand the challenges involved in trying to use this small space to the full.
I have been involved all my working life with design, garden design, horticulture and garden retailing. At present I work as a buyer for a large South west garden centre.
I have a passion for good cutting edge design and plants that excite.
Frank.
